Q: What is a NBA In-Tournament pool?

A: The NBA In-Season Tournament is a new annual competition for all 30 teams that will debut in the 2023-24 season. Similar to the World Cup, the NBA In-Season Tournament will consist of two stages: Group Play and the Knockout Rounds.

Q: What is group play option mean?

A: During group play, 30 teams are broken into six groups containing five teams each. Each team competes in a round robin tournament with the other teams in its group. At the end of the group stage, the top 8 teams will advance to the Knockout round.

Q: What does knockout round mean?

A: The final 8 teams participate in a single elimination bracket pool. For those of you familiar with the NCAA Basketball tournament, think of the Knockout round as the NBA equivalent to the Elite Eight.

Q: How does the In-Season Tournament pool work?

A: Here are the rules:

  • Pool Commissioners have the option of including both the Group and Knockout Stage or limiting their pool to just the Knockout Stage.

  • For the Group stage, pool members predict the finishing position of each team in all the groups and points are awarded for correct predictions. Points are awarded for each correct team ranking in each groups.

  • For the Knockout stage, members pick all 8 games in the bracket and are awarded points for correct picks. They will pick the ACTUAL teams qualifying for bracket play, NOT those they predicted to advance. This means they will fill out their brackets AFTER the Group Stage is completed.

  • Point values for both stages are configurable by the Pool Commissioner.

  • The goal is to be the member with the most points at the end of the In-Season Tournament.

Most In-Season Tournament Pools will include the Group stage to allow more pick variation.

Q: Where do I turn my group staging on/off?

A: You will go to your commissioner console > pool settings > scoring settings > toggle group play on/off:

Q: Can I edit my points awarded in the knockout stage?

A: You will go to your commissioner console > pool settings > scoring settings > and fill in the fields under the knockout stage section:

Q: Is there a tie-breaker I can use if any members tie?

A: Yes, the tie-breaker is where members will have to guess the combined score of the championship game. It is whoever is the closest (doesn't matter if they are over or not).
